Emergency Response to child protection

Child protection at Ivorian refugee camps

‘Save the Children’ Sweden, collaborated with Life Relief Foundation (LRF) to ensure that all children have their rights respected, and are politically and religiously independent.
They work for children who are exposed to violence and abuse, do not go to school, lack support from parents and other adults, and live in poverty or war and disasters.
They are also fighting for all children to have a safe and healthy childhood, to be able to make their voices heard and thus have influence over the situation. No child should be exposed to violence, abuse or discrimination.

Geographic areas: Western & Central regions (Ampain & Egyeikrom)

The programme took place in the Western and Central Regions of Ghana and

reached out to the targeted communities (Ampain & Egyeikrom).

ACTIVITIES

  • Avoid exposing people to further harm as a result of your actions; It stipulates that those involved in humanitarian responses must do all they can to avoid exposing people affected by disaster, particularly children, to further harm during the provision of relief and assistance.
  • Ensure people’s access to impartial assistance: humanitarian assistance must be available to all those in need without any discrimination or exclusion on political or any other grounds.
  • Protect people from physical and psychological harm arising from violence and coercion: Children must be protected from violence; being forced or induced to act against their will, and from fear of such abuse.

  • Assist people to claim their rights, access available remedies and recover from the effects of abuse: This principle reminds us that children are rights-holders and that we have the obligation of assisting them and their caretakers to claim their rights.
  • Strengthen child protection systems in humanitarian settings: The child protection system may have become weakened or ineffective. However, the emergency phase may provide an opportunity to develop and strengthen the national child protection system, including community-based mechanisms of protection.

  • ACHIEVEMENT

The mortality rate among children under five decreased and the number of children attending school have increased in Ampain & Egyeikrom communities.
